My usual idea for an exotic summer getaway is anywhere that can be reached via my Huffy bike, “Blue Betty.” It can include such far-flung locales as Coney Island, Red Hook, Chinatown, what have you. While I highly recommend any of these fine neighborhoods, sometimes a real road trip is in order. Where else can you eat roadside takeout with abandon, put the iPod on Shuffle for long and windy hours, and stock up on souvenir backscratchers and shot glasses?

One of my biggest road-trip stresses? That would be awkwardly asking the first neighbor or friend who is sucker enough to pick up the phone to feed my pets. Yeah, I know it’s throwing food in a bowl but frankly I’d rather just pay someone I can trust and get it over with. I’m sure my cat, Superfuzz, would agree.
